Jackie Kennedy autograph letter as First Lady on four pages of White House letterhead, undated, but likely October 1961. Letter, written in blue ink with pencil edits in her assistant's hand, is a draft letter to the President of the Daughters of the American Revolution regarding a chair that the First Lady hoped they would ''loan'' to the White House. Reads in part: ''…about the Bellange chair, ordered by Pres. Monroe for the Oval room, which is now in the DAR museum in Washington. If the DAR will present [crossed out and replaced with loan] this chair to the W. House...have the presentation covered by the press. This would take place in the Oval Room, in front of the Monroe pie-table, recently discovered in the W. House...The only original Bellange chair given by Miss Catherine Bohlen of Villa Nova, PA, now stands to the left of the pie-table. Then [I] would like to ask the Executive Board of the DAR to have tea...Because the DAR has such roots in America's past...it would be most fitting to have them present the 1st publicized piece of Presidential furniture that has been returned to the W. House...hope that their fine example would encourage other museums & collectors to return other pieces of Presidential furniture...if so desired it could be presented as an indefinite loan…'' Letter measures 5'' x 8'' and is in very good condition.
