Signed book: Love of Life. Later printing. NY: Macmillan Company, 1907. Hardcover, 5.5 x 7.75, 265 pages. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page, “Dear Brady: - Here’s that Brown Wolf yarn you & I were talking about. Jack London, Feb. 5/15.” Inside front cover bears a pencil gift inscription reading, “From Joyce & Selznick.” There is a “Property of Vanguard Films, Inc.,” stamp to signed page, affecting a couple lines of inscription, another similar stamp on the back pastedown. In good to very good condition, with some cracking to front and back hinge, mild toning and soiling to signed page, spine a bit loose, light wear and rubbing to covers, and wear and partial separation to fabric of spine.

The “Joyce” in question here was Joyce Selznick, a talent agent, casting director, and the niece of film executive David O. Selznick—whose Selznick International Pictures evolved into Vanguard Films. Among the tales featured in this volume is ‘Brown Wolf’—the “yarn” that London identifies in his inscription, while the title story, ‘Love of Life,’ is one of the renowned author’s most celebrated works. Marvelous literary reference by the legendary author.
