Jack Kirby and Joe Simon - Western Tales #31 Davy
Jack Kirby and Joe Simon - Western Tales #31 Davy Crockett Cover Original Art (Harvey, 1955). Davy Crockett tackles a snarling bear in true Simon & Kirby fashion -- barehanded! Warning: don't try this on the hiking trails, dear collectors! Simon & Kirby's talent for portraying dynamic action was ideally suited for illustrating the "exciting adventures of the West's greatest hero." Never accused of being modest, Crockett himself claimed to have killed 105 bears in less than one year in the autobiographical yarn, "Bear Hunting in Tennessee." Another legend had the woodsman "grinning down a bear." Walt Disney broadcast its TV films of the American icon in 1954 and 1955, and they sparked a fad for coonskin caps and all things Davy Crockett that swept the nation like wildfire. Simon and Kirby jumped on the phenomenon and produced their own two-fisted vision of the fabled woodsman statesman. The image area of the cover measures 12" x 18", and the art is in Excellent condition. Joe Simon has since signed the art in the lower right margin. This sensational cover is sure to be a prized trophy for any Crockett collector or Simon & Kirby fan!
