Colorful African-American boxer (1878–1946) who held the world heavyweight championship from 1908 to 1915 and whose achievements in and out of the ring created an unprecedented storm of racially charged controversy. Johnson’s tumultuous personal life and career were dramatized in the classic play (and subsequent film) The Great White Hope. Vintage signature and inscription, “From Jack Johnson to Packey O’Gatty,” on an off-white 10.75 x 2.25 slip. Slip is affixed to an 11 x 9.25 off-white card, with four clipped magazine photos affixed above signature, including one of Johnson at a dinner seated with flyweight Young Zulu Kid and bantamweight/featherweight Packey O’Gatty, as well as a small caption for a Luncheon Rally held on November 27, 1945. In fine condition, with light creasing to lower right corner, affecting portion of inscription, and some scattered light soiling. Originally acquired from the estate of Packey O’Gatty. Excellent boxing relation.
