Handwritten Western Union telegram, one page, 8 x 7, September 12, 1925. Dempsey sends a telegram to Dayton, Ohio, promoter Frank Mantel. In full: “Date too soon impossible before Oct. First.” Double-matted and framed with an image of Dempsey to an overall size of 16 x 22. A central vertical fold, uniform toning, and expected notations, otherwise fine condition. At this time, Dempsey had broken off ties with his longtime manager Jack Kearns, and was in the midst of trying to sign a fight with Harry Wills.
