Jack Butler Yeats RHA (1871-1957) WHEN
Jack Butler Yeats RHA (1871-1957) WHEN FERRETS LIE UP signed and dated [1897] in the plate lower right hand-coloured lithograph on paper mounted on card 17 by 23cm., 6.5 by 9in. Provenance: Collection of artist Dan O'Neill (1920-1974); By whom given to the present owner Literature: Hilary Pyle, Jack B. Yeats: His Watercolours, Drawings and Pastels, Irish Academic Press, Dublin, 1993, page 63, see no.s 45, 46 and 47 A rare early lithograph, one of only two known examples. The second copy is in the collection of the V&A Museum, where it has long been catalogued as an original watercolour. Pyle also lists the V&A work as a watercolour in her catalogue (op. cit., no. 45), the entry for which was compiled based upon information supplied by the museum. However, Yeats recorded in his work diaries having painted a pair of watercolours, When Ferrets Lie Up and When Rabbits are Plentiful, which were exhibited in 1897 at the Clifford Gallery, London, and sold there to “a man with copyright and reproduced in colour”. Neither of the watercolours nor the lithograph of the second work have ever been traced. Both the present example and that in the V&A have been hand-coloured, almost certainly by Yeats himself, and mounted on board.
