JULIAN ONDERDONK, Early Texas oil/canvas
JULIAN ONDERDONK (1882-1922)
October Landscape
Oil on canvas
24 x 30 inches (61.0 x 76.2 cm)
Signed lower right

Julian Onderdonk came under the influence of three landscape traditions: the Barbizon School, the Tonalists, and the American Impressionists. This impressive large-scale painting is a synthesis of two of these traditions: Tonalism and Impressionism.

This painting reveals Julian Onderdonk's mastery of light, color, and atmosphere. The bright overcast day reveals itself in the middle of the painting as the sun cuts through thinning clouds behind the central tree. That same light is reflected across the water and in highlights throughout the undergrowth of the foreground.

While the full palette is primarily browns (tonalist in character), chromatic overtones of purples, grays, blues, and yellows are integrated into the midground and provide richness to the composition. The hazy atmospheric effects and trees in the distance are handled with Onderdonk's typical soft touch.

The heavier impasto of the water reflections and surrounding undergrowth is characteristically impressionist and is similar in texture to the foreground in William Merritt Chase's Shinnecock landscapes. Chase's influence on Onderdonk will be highlighted in the upcoming exhibition on Julian Onderdonk at the Dallas Museum of Art.Condition Report: Relined canvas. Very minor scattered inpainting.
