Later, his studies expanded to include instruction with William Merrit Chase, Frank Vincent DuMond, and Robert Henri.<BR><BR>At the turn of the century, Tonalism (1880-1920) was a widely practiced and popular style in American landscape painting. The style was characterized by landscapes with an overall tone of colored atmosphere or mist. Gregys, browns, or blues would usually dominate such compositions. A popular subject was disk or dawn with a rising mist.<BR><BR>This tonalist painting of New York's Central Park by Onderdonk was painted near the turn of the century.
