Texas, 1913
Oil on wood panel
8 x 11 inches (20.3 x 27.9 cm)
Signed lower left
Signed, dated, and titled verso

The year of 1913 was a breakthrough year for Julian Onderdonk. He was elected to the prestigious Salmagundi Club in New York. He also had two paintings, both Texas landscapes, accepted by the National Academy of Design for inclusion in their winter show. Onderdonk's reputation in Texas was growing as well.

This early bluebonnet painting, dated 1913, is an exceptional example of Onderdonk's finest work. The use of light across the midground of the composition is masterful. Rain can be seen to the left side of the painting and clearing skies to the right. Onderdonk has caught that magical moment when the rain has stopped, the sun has come out, and nature with all her vigor and freshness is at its peak. Even the puddles in the winding dirt road reflect the magic of the moment. This is the artist at his best, successful at what all impressionists strive to do, which is to catch the fleeting moments of light and nature.

This painting has remained in the same family for ninety-four years. It was purchased directly from the artist. It was framed under glass which has kept the painting in a remarkable state of preservation. There are no losses, no cracking, no accumulation of grime or dust. This is a unique chance to own a true Texas masterpiece in absolutely pristine condition.

Provenance:
Acquired by descent from the artist by the present ownerCondition Report: Excellent condition.
