Author, fervent abolitionist and suffragette best remembered as the author of “Battle Hymn of the Republic” (1862), inspired by a visit to a Union army camp. Howe was the first woman elected to American Academy of Arts and Letters. AMsS, 1p, 8vo, n.p., n.d. Unpublished poem in two stanzas of four lines each, beginning “<i>No foot hast thou for frolic or for speed </i>/ <i>No brain to plan for conquest or for need.</i>..” and concluding “...<i>O grant mysterious Towers that this may prove</i> / <i>a riddle of fair omen, writ in love.</i>” Boldly penned and signed. Ink slightly uneven; else a Fine example.
