JUDAH P BENJAMIN (1811-84) Confederate Sec of State. Manuscript DS, as attorney for John Slidell in a lawsuit, signed "Benjamin, atty", 5pp, 1840, legal folio, Parish Court, Louisiana. In small part, "...The petition of John Slidell who resides in New Orleans humbly shows, that Charles F Timpel...has fled to foreign parts...is justly and truly indebted to petitioner in the full sum of Twenty thousand...in the beginning of the year 1837 the affairs of the said Timpel became deranged...until to meet his engagements, the said Timpel endeavored by fraudulent...transfers of his property to save it for the pursuits of his creditors...by false representations..." Also signed on the 6th page by JOHN SLIDELL (1793-1871), who would later become Confederate Commissioner to France, and who was seized by Federal Navy while on the British ship "HMS Trent", nearly bringing England into the war on the side of the South. Certifying that, "...being duly sworn deposes that he fears the defendent...in whose possession the property...may sell...or otherwise depose of the same during the pending of this suit..."
