VERZeLINI'S ACTs OF FAITH is a work that exemplifies the craftsmanship that Josiah McElheny has become so well known for. The piece is comprised of a cabinet containing McElheny's delicate, handmade glass reproductions of various vessels depicted in some of the most famous religious paintings from the Renaissance. Among the receptacles displayed is a reproduction of the chalice found in Veronese's LAST SUPER and a vase seen in Tintoretto's ANNUNCIATION. The title of the work refers to the Venetian glass-blower, Giacomo Verzelini who, sometime before his death in the early 17th Century, had reportedly created the same kind of reproduction as an act of faith. In the present work we see art historical and religious reference combined with the myth of VERZELINI'S ACT OF FAITH along with modern day craftsmanship to create a three dimensional homage to fact as well as fiction.
