JOSHUA K SIGFRIED (1832-96) Union Brevet Brigadier General, 48th Pennsylvania. Wardate DS, as Colonel commanding the 48th Penn, 1p, May 14, 1863, oblong folio, a posthumous promotion of Henry Jenkins to 1st Corporal. Jenkins had been wounded at 2nd Bull Run and died on Sept 15, 1862. Most of the 48th Penn were coal miners from the the Pottsville area. In July, 1864, the regiment entered history when they dug a tunnel reaching under the Confederate entrenchments at Petersburg, Va. They blew up a mine as planned, creating the now infamous crater. Some tears and a couple of small holes at folds, o/w VG. An ornate document, posthumously promoting a dead soldier. $400-600
