JOSHUA B HOWELL (1806-64) Union Brigadier General; commanded a brigade of Terry's Division at siege of Fort Wagner, S.C.; distinguished himself at Petersburg, VA (May 20, 1864), retaking a line of rifle pits previously captured by Confederates; died of injuries received by fall from his horse near Petersburg. Civil War date DS, as Colonel commanding 85th Penn Vols, 1p, Mar 14, 1862, 4to, entitled, "Invoice of Ordnance and Ordnance Stores, turned over by Capt. H.A. Purviance 85th Pa. Vols., at Meridian Hill, near Washington D.C. to Col. J.B. Howell..." Capt Henry A Purviance rose in rank to Lt Colonel, and was killed in action at Ft Wagner, South Carolina, Aug 30, 1863.
