JOSEPH STALIN: (1879 - 1953) Soviet Premier and dictator who reorganized the government and army through bloody purges of his political enemies, allied with the Nazis who then turned on him and invaded the Soviet Union, costing 20 million lives. An outstanding and very rare A.D.S., 1p. 8vo., [Moscow?], Apr. 18, 1935, a playful note written by Stalin to his eight and eleven year-old children, daughter Svetlana ("Setanka")and son Vasily ("Vasya"). In indelible blue pencil he writes a charming note hinting at his Communist background, in full: "Setanka and Vasya! I send you sweets, which were received by your mother from Grandmother from Tiflis [Stalin's old home where he studied theology]. Divide them in equal parts [all underlined], please no fighting. You can make a treat of whatever you want. [Signed] Secretary of Setanka [who is] the Owner. J. Stalin". Fine condition. Svetlana's relationship with her father ranged from adoration to outright fighting. In 1967, she entered the American Embassy in New Delhi and applied for asylum in the United States, where she spent the rest of her life. Vasily was less fortunate - he became an alcoholic and died in an automobile crash at a young age. A supremely rare and surprising insight into one of history's most murderous dictators! $4,000-6,000
