JOSEPH HEWES (1730-79) Signer of Declaration of Independence. DS, signed in full at conclusion and again in the text, 1p, Dec 27, 1766, 4to, Chowan County, North Carolina, legal document, re posting a bond in a court case. In part, "...Know all Men by these presents that we Francis Hammett Joseph Hewes & Cornelius Moore ...are held & firmly bound unto Joseph Blount Sheriff of the County...in the full & Just Sum of Two hundred & forty Pounds Proc[lamatio]n Money... The condition of this Obligation is such that if the above bounden [sic] Francis Hammett do & shall make his Personal Appearance before our Chief Justice...at the Next Court of Justice..then & there to answer to James Palmer of a Plea of Tresspass..." Although Hewes was not an attorney, he was a thriving businessman. One person who knew him described him as "a particular favorite with everybody" and "one of the best and most agreeable men in the world." In this document Hewes was probably helping Hammett, who was likely an acquaintance, with the bail on his trespassing charge. Light toning, o/w VG. Boldly penned. $7,500-10,000
