We had agreed that I was to receive a good-sized work for my gallery's fifth anniversary exhibition. He led me over to an old, used baker's board and asked 'How do you like it Mr. Klein?' I found it at first very basic, although it gave off a wonderful smell of past baking. At the ends of the board Joseph Beuys had fastened two spits of turf. Then, in my presence, with brush and silver paint, he added his signature and two right angled fields of force in the middle of the board. To my great delight, he then also sketched, by hand, a poster and the invitation card for the exhibition. I came to understand the baker's board in the context of Beuys' work even better as time went by. It remained one of my favorite pieces."-Erhard Klein (Hirschl & Adler Modern, Joseph Beuys, Ideas and Action, New York, pp. 60-61.)
