(1822 - 1894) Confederate major general who directed Morris Island in the bombing of Fort Sumter, commanded a brigade at Antietam, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg, captured at Sayler's Creek thus serving the entire war. Rare A.L.S. "J. B. Kershaw" on his law office letterhead, 2pp., 8vo., Camden, S.C., June 15, 1877, to Hon. B. H. Massey, in part: "...I have been waiting for the opportunity to write you to thank you for your noble and distinguished support in the recent elections...It will be the aim of my life to justify your good opinion & I will always remember gratefully your generous support...". Very good.
