When he discovered that he preferred more intimate views, he began photographing small still-lifes, and occasionally women, as in this work. His masterful use of light and shadow captures the glimmer in Milena's eyes and imbues this photograph with a subdued radiance. Sudek's manipulation of the pigment process and his poetic subject matter refer to the Pictorialist style and illustrate his fascination with Impressionism.
