JOSE ARPA (1858-1952)
Artist's Son in the Studio, 1900
Oil on canvas
39 x 55 inches (99.1 x 139.7 cm)
Signed and dated lower left

This painting was painted by Jose Arpa just after his arrival in Mexico in 1896. The Mexican government had invited him to teach at the Academy of Fine Arts in Mexico City, but when he arrived he declined employment. Instead he settled in Puebla with some friends from Spain.

In this painting a small boy, presumably the artist's son, has taken a seat in the artist's studio where he has begun painting a picture. He is wearing a little sailor's uniform, and has the artist's palette in one hand and a brush in the other. With a sheepish grin he is working on a small painting of a man in a hat. The rest of the painting is what might be best described as a trompe l'oeil of the artist's studio.

Several paintings fill the studio: a large framed impressionist masterpiece of a harbor scene, several small portrait studies, a Moroccan with a Fez (from Arpa's prior travels in that country), and a couple of smaller oils. Two small copper pots sparkle from reflected light. Other knick-knacks, correspondence, artist paint brushes, and a Pre-Columbian statuette fill the space.

This is an exceptional opportunity to own a well-exhibited and well documented early Jose Arpa painting.

Exhibitions/Literature:
Exhibition Catalog of Circulo Catolico de Puebla, Puebla Mexico, April-May 1900
Exhibition in San Antonio around 1905
Catalog of the exhibition, Jose Arpa y Perea, Foundation El Monte Seville Spain, pp 44, 45, 70 and 77

Provenance:
Collection of Manuel Perez de Salazar, Mexico D.F.
Private CollectionCondition Report: Relined.
