JONES, DAVID R.
(1825 - 1863) Confederate brigadier general who served as Beauregard's chief of staff at the siege of Fort Sumter, led a division with solid competence throughout the Peninsula Campaign. Exceedingly rare war-date A.D.S. ""D. R. Jones A. A. Genl"" 1p. 4to., Charleston, Apr. 11, 1861, an appointment titled ""General Orders No. 17"". In part: ""...Hons. W. Porcher Miles and Roger A Pryor, having tendered their services to Brigadier General Beauregard, are hereby appointed Volunteer Aides de Camps...By order of Brigadier General Beauregard..."". Jones signed this the day that Beauregard demanded the surrender of Fort Sumter. Interestingly, both men mentioned took an active role in the surrender of Fort Sumter. Along with Jones, Miles and Pryor, acting on Beauregard's behalf, negotiated the terms surrender of Fort Sumter with Anderson on the afternoon of April 13, 1861. And Jones himself hauled down the U.S. flag there. W. Porcher Miles was also the designer of the first national Confederate flag. A fine association piece signed on a truly historic day. Mounted to another sheet, very good condition.
