October 17, 1806-Dated, Partly-printed Document Signed, "Jona Trumbull" as Governor of Connecticut, on fairly clean laid period paper, at New Haven, measuring 7.75" x 12.75", Very Fine. In this Military Commission, Governor Trumbull is Appointing John T. Meigs, "Lieutenant of the fourth Company in the 27th Regiment of Militia in this State..." and is Countersigned by Samuel Wyllys, as Secretary. Boldly printed in deep black, there is some scattered light tone mostly at the outer edges and a couple of trivial pinholes at the folds. The large, beautiful embossed, 2.75” x 3.5” paper and red wax Connecticut State Seal is fully intact. Trumbull's huge 4.5" long signature is boldly signed at the lower right.
Jonathan Trumbull, Jr. was a 1759 graduate of Harvard College, served in the Continental Army as a Paymaster. From 1778 to 1779, he was Comptroller of the Treasury. He served as Secretary to General George Washington from 1780 to 1783. Trumbull represented Connecticut in the First, Second, and Third Congresses, serving from March 4, 1789 to March 3, 1795; he was the 2nd Speaker of the House from October 24, 1791 to March 4, 1793. He did not seek reelection to the House, having become a candidate for U. S. Senator. Elected to the United States Senate, Trumbull served from March 4, 1795, to June 10, 1796, when he resigned; he had become Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut on January 5, 1796, serving until the death of Governor Oliver Wolcott on December 1, 1797. Reelected for eleven consecutive terms, Trumbull served until his death on August 7, 1809.
