onathan Trumbull (1710-1785) Colonial Governor Connecticut and Oliver Wolcott (1726-1797) Trumbull was prominent in the colony after 1733, serving in the assembly, of which he became speaker, and in other offices. He was chief justice of the superior court and deputy governor before becoming governor in 1769. He served until 1784 and rendered great services to George Washington in the American Revolution. Wolcott was a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence and also the Articles of Confederation as a representative of Connecticut and the fourth Governor of Connecticut. 7 ½” x 3” autograph receipt signed, as governor, Lebanon, July 1, 1776 and endorsed by Wolcott. “Received of Mr. Caleb Abel…Fourty six pounds Eight Shillings…for raising a Company of Ship Carpenters….” These carpenters were for Benedict Arnold’s Champlain fleet.
