Handsome Autographed Color Photograph Signed, “Jonas Salk,” no date, Choice Near Mint. This wonderful image of the famous scientist who discovered the polio vaccine. It shows Salk wearing a suit with his arms crossed while holding a hypodermic syringe, while two children stand by his side. Image is Signed “Jonas Salk” in heavy deep black ink on this lower jacket. In 1948, while working at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Salk, along with a skilled team of researchers he assembled, worked for seven years to develop the vaccine against polio. When the success of his trials were made public on April 12, 1955, Salk was hailed as a “miracle worker” who would forever be remembered in medical history.
Jonas Edward Salk (1914-1995) was a physician and medical researcher who corroborated with scientists in studies to identify three separate strains of the polio virus. In 1952, he conducted field tests on children who recovered from polio, and then on subjects who had not had the disease, and both tests were successful.
