JOHNSTONE ( John ). An account of the most approved mode of draining land; according to the system practised by Mr. Joseph Elkington, late of Princethorp, in the county of Warwick : with an appendix, containing hints for the farther improvement of bogs and other marshy ground, after draining ; together with observations on hollow and surface draining in general … Drawn up for consideration of the Board of Agriculture and Internal Improvement, by John Johnstone, land-surveyor. Dublin : Printed by order and under the patronage of the Dublin Society, 1800FIRST IRISH EDITION, with 16 folding engraved plates and 2 small text illustrations, pages xiii, (1, blank), 180 and leaf of "Conclusion", 8vo, original boards, uncut : the binding worn with most of the spine label legible, otherwise a very good copy in original state. “During the agricultural revolution, land drainage in England transformed landscapes from wetlands to productive fields and pastures – a subject for which Joseph Elkington developed a national reputation. His expertise was distinctive for its time, in that he had, through field experience and observation developed a remarkably good understanding of the hydrologic cycle … 50 years before pioneering geologic work by William Smith … Through relatively simple methods, the value of vast areas of formerly swampy land was greatly increased for grazing and agriculture purposes. Moreover, Elkington’s projects put the drained water to beneficial use for domestic water supply, irrigation, and milling. Johnstone was commissioned to visit Elkington and chronicle his knowledge. The original 1797 publication and this scarce Dublin reprint both include detailed cross-sections and plan view perspectives of hydrogeologic conditions and Elkington’s drainage solutions, as well as diagrams of drilling equipment, such as the horizontal auger." - Daniel B.
