JOHNSTON, JOSEPH E.
(1807 - 1891) Confederate major general who led armies at Bull Run and Seven Pines. Johnston is perhaps best remembered for his stubborn defense of Atlanta and his resistance to Sherman's March to the Sea. Good content A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., Bedford Springs, Pa., Sep. 4, 1885 to ex-CSA Gen. Cadmus M. Wilcox. In part: "…I have just received your letter in relation to the [South Carolina] Military Academy…Genl. hagood requested Genl. Hunt to [?] to him a competent person to be Superintendent of the State Military Academy…he consulted me, and we agreed upon you…I know little of the state of things…but before the war it was a very pleasant one to serve…such a school was in operation some 20 years before the war, and furnished some excellent officers…" Very good.
