[JOHNSON ( Samuel ), SMART ( Christopher ), Goldsmith (Oliver )]. The World displayed ; or, a curious collection of voyages and travels, selected from the writers of all nations. In which the conjectures and interpolations of several vain editors and translators are expunged ; every relation is made concise and plain, and the divisions of countries and kingdoms are clearly and distinctly noted. Printed for T. Carnan and F. Newbery, Jun, 1766-74With 161 engraved plates, 15 of which are folding, including folding maps of North and South America, plans of Quebec and Louisbourg, etc., 20 vols bound in 10, 12mo, uniform contemporary calf, fully gilt spines, with red and green labels, gilt : headbands worn, with some light cracks in joints but all boards strongly secure, wanting a spine label and with one label defective, yet a very good, unsophisticated, strongly bound and still attractive set.Fleeman 59.12WD/4. Johnson wrote the (30)-pp introduction and may have helped in the selection. Complete sets in the same edition are remarkably uncommon. Our set comprises first editions (15-18), second editions (19-20), third editions (2-13), and fourth editions (1 and 14). Each of the ten double volumes bears the same near contemporary book-label and are complete with the adverts in vols 1, 4, 10, 13 and 17 and the blank leaf in vol 17. The imprints vary slightly throughout but all are either Newbery alone or Carnan and Newbery combined.
