(JOHNSON, ANDREW)
(1808 - 1875) Seventeenth President of the United States following the death of Abraham Lincoln, his Reconstruction policies led to his impeachment by Congress. Historically important D.S. ""A. Johnson"" with stamped signature as President, 1p. folio, Washington, July 27, 1866, an ornate military appointment of Henry J. Hunt as ""Major General BY BREVET...to rank as such from [March 13, 1865]...for gallant and meritorious service in the field during the War..."". HENRY J. HUNT (1819-1889), served gallantly in the Mexican War, but won his greatest fame as the Union brigadier general and Chief of Artillery of the Army of the Potomac who broke the Confederate pursuit at Bull Run, opened the battle at Fredericksburg, and mowed down Confederates at Gettysburg in Pickett's Charge. Authentically signed by Secretary of War EDWIN M. STANTON. Stanton's signature is just a tad light, otherwise in very good to fine condition.
