JOHNSON, ADAM R.
(1834 - 1922) "Stovepipe", Confederate brigadier general who rode with Morgan and was nicknamed for his deceptive use of stovepipe joints to simulate a cannon, a ruse he used to capture Newburgh, Indiana. In 1864 Johnson was accidentally shot and blinded by his own men. War-date partly-printed D.S. signed twice "A. R. Johnson Col. 10th Ky. Cav'y" on CSA Requisition for Forage form, 1p. oblong sm. folio, [Atlanta], June 26, 1864, seeking forage for horses "…in the service of Gen'l. [John Hunt] Morgan's com'd…". Also bears an A.E.S. on verso by MARCUS J. WRIGHT (1831-1922), who approves the order. Near fine.
