JOHN W. CRAWFORD: (1847 - 1917) "Captain Jack", American scout who served Marritt and Crook, and Chief of Scouts for the Black Hills Rangers. Later in life he became the author of over 100 short stories. Rare S.P., a 5 1/2" x 8" steel engraving of Crawford in western garb, likely removed from a book. On verso Crawford writes a poem and signs (in pencil), in full: "Acrostical to Mary May angels bless thee Mary, And keep you in their car. Rest and peace and pleasure, Yours Joy and skys most fair. Yours truly J. W. Crawford 'Capt. Jack". Light soiling, else very good. $200-300
