<hr align=left size=5 width=33% color=#778899>(1848-1922). American author, poet and librarian. He wrote “Great is To-Day” and other poems and was a contributor to <i>The Atlantic Monthly, The Century, Scribner’s</i> and other periodicals. Manuscript, 2pp, separate, 8vo, n.p., [1887]. Unsigned. His poem, “In the Lane” in six verses of six lines each. In part, “<i>And art thou then, my heart, too old / Ever to leap with love again, / To feel the strong blood-torrent rolled / Through heaving breast and teeming brain? / Is it no more, my heart, for thee / Life’s one unquestioned ecstasy?</i>...” Boldly penned in Cheney’s hand, including edit of one line in last verse. Published in <i>The Century</i> in Mar 1887, pp 706-707. Identified in pencil on verso. Penciled docket at top of first page, “<i>Accepd. OSSP / Century / Set soon / Miss Prints</i>”; on verso of second page is penciled “<i>Mch 87</i>.” Light soiling; pages attached at top marginal edge with glue of minimal affect; o/w VG.
