JOHN R. GOLDSBOROUGH
(1809 - 1877) Union naval captain, given command of the screw steamer USS "Union". With that vessel he served on blockade duty off the Carolinas, capturing four Confederate blockade runners, including the privateer CSS "York". He also administered the colony of freed slaves on St. Simons Island, Georgia. Promoted to Captain in July 1862, he was assigned to command another blockader, the USS Florida with which he also captured a number of rebel blockade runners. War-date manuscript General Order as Commander, St. Simon's Sound, 1p. 4to., July 18, 1862: "Hereafter no person belonging to the division of vessels under my command will be allowed to go out of signal distance from the vessel to which he belongs without the permission of his commanding officer. The horses on the island of St. Simons are not to be used by any one for any purpose without my special permission...". Fine condition.
