JOHN QUINCY ADAMS: (1767 - 1848) Sixth President of the United States, Secretary of State under Monroe who principally formulated the Monroe Doctrine. An unusual pair of A.D.'s, unsigned, each 1p. legal folio, Wrentham, Mass., Jan. 1 & 7, 1794. The first document is an affidavit of John Madey certifying that he is a "...resident at Wrentham in the County of Norfolk gentlemen humbly represents to this Honorable Court, that he is an alien a free white person, that he has resided within the limits and under the jurisdiction of the United States for the term of two years, and in this State for the term of one year last past. He therefore prays that upon his making proof to the Satisfaction of this Honorable Court, that he is a person of good character, he may be admitted as a Citizen of the United States...". The second document is an affidavit in which four others "...well acquainted with John Madey...recommend him as a person of good character...".
