JOHN PROFUMO
(1915-2006) Disgraced British politician whose career ended with his notorious 1963 scandal involving a prostitute and reputed mistress of a Soviet spy commonly referred to as "The Profumo Affair". A lot of three scarce and fine content pieces, the first an A.L.S. 1p. 4to., London, [n.d. but early 1950s], on letterhead of the Office of the Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, to Paul Raditz, in part: "...I hasten to write on this special paper - the first time I have used it - to tell you that I have most unexpectedly been made a junior Minister!! I am delighted especially for Mama's sake & the job is right by my street and I have always been interested in things of the Air. I knew nothing till Mr. Churchill sent for me to Downey Street the day before the announcement....Am terrifically busy at this time being as it's most confusing to run a department of State, having no previous experience....". With two later T.Ls.S. on House of Commons letterhead, 1p. 4to., June 30, 1953, to Mrs. Raditz, the mother of the aforementioned correspondent Paul, who lived in Spartanburg, South Carolina, upon the death of her son with sympathetic content, and a second dated July 28, 1953, again to Mrs. Raditz with similar content. Together with a vintage sepia image of Profumo in formal Scottish garb and an 8" x 10" b/w image of Profumo in an "Orientalist" costume. Very good.

Estimate: $200 - 300.
