First member of Provincial Council of Pennsylvania; grandson of founder William Penn; lieutenant governor and governor of PA (1763-1776), briefly held prisoner in 1777, who tried to steer a middle course with regard to the Revolutionary contest. Partly printed DS on laid paper, 1p, oblong legal folio, Philadelphia, May 24, 1770. An order to affix the Great Seal to a land patent granted to Edward Stiles for “<i>a lot in the City of Philadelphia for which this shall be your sufficient Warrant</i>...” Boldly signed in left margin beneath intact paper seal. Three light vertical folds; light general toning; mounting strip at bottom verso; show through of docket on verso; o/w VG.<b> $300-500</b>
