<B>JOHN ORTH (1889-1976)</B></I><BR><I>Belmonte</B></I><BR>Oil on canvas<BR>24 x 36 inches (61.0 x 91.4 cm)<BR>Signed and titled lower right<BR><BR> The modern style of Spanish bullfighting is credited to Juan Belmonte, generally considered the finest matador of all time. Belmonte introduced a daring and revolutionary style, in which he stayed within a few inches of the bull throughout the fight. Although extremely dangerous (Belmonte was gored on many occasions), his style is still considered the ideal by most matadors.
