JOHN MUIR RARE A.L.S.
393. JOHN MUIR (1838 - 1914) American naturalist who
centered his studies in Yosemite and helped make the valley a national park, worked with Theodore Roosevelt to set aside vast tracts of land for posterity. Rare A.L.S. "John Muir" 1p. 4to., Martinez, Ca., Jan. 6, 1902 to Charles Skinner. In part: "...I thank you highly for your capital article on the parking of the Grand Colorado Can[y]on. Send a copy of it to the President, & if you like, say I am with you. I'll do what I can...". Mounted, a few creases, overall very good. Apparently, Muir's words were heeded: President Theodore Roosevelt visited the Grand Canyon in 1903 and was much impressed. The 1906 Act for the Preservation of American Antiquities paved the way for Roosevelt, a devoted outdoorsman and park supporter, to change Grand Canyon's status from national forest and game reserve to national monument in 1908, and Congress authorized the expansion and upgrading of the monument to a national park in 1919. $1,000-1,500
