“John Morton” Signer of the Declaration of Independence & Congressman “Charles Humphreys” Who Voted Against
JOHN MORTON (1725-1777). Signer of the Declaration of Independence, Chaired the committee that wrote the Articles of Confederation, Delegate to the Continental Congress during the American Revolution providing the swing vote that allowed Pennsylvania to vote in favor of the United States Declaration of Independence.
Fr. PA-154. Pennsylvania. April 3, 1772. One Shilling. Plate B. Signed by “John Morton,” Conservation. Choice Very Fine. Strong bold brown signature “John Morton” at top of the three signatures. This note also strongly Signed by “John Sellers” and “Charles Humphreys.” Humphreys was a member of the Pennsylvania Provincial Congress (1764-1774) and served as a Member of the First Continental Congress (1774-1776), but he actually Voted Against the Declaration of Independence because as a practicing Quaker he was opposed to any act that would escalate violence in the American Revolutionary War with England and withdrew himself from the Congress soon afterward. This note is well centered and quite even and clean in appearance having a deft sealed centerfold edge split. This is a historically important piece of Pennsylvania and American history, having bold signatures of both “John Morton” a Signer of the Declaration of Independence and Continental Congressman “Charles Humphreys,” who famously voted against it!
John Morton (1724-1777),born in Pennsylvania of Swedish ancestry. He was elected a member of the provincial Assembly in 1756 and was re-elected to the same office for ten consecutive years, he was a member of the Stamp Act Congress and also a member of the Continental Congress of 1774-1777. Morton was the deciding vote on behalf of Pennsylvania for the adopting of Independence.

Charles Humphreys (September 19, 1714 – March 11, 1786) was an American Miller and Statesman from Haverford, Pennsylvania. He is the son of Daniel Humphreys and Hannah Wynne (daughter of Dr. Thomas Wynne). He served as a Delegate for Pennsylvania to the Continental Congress from 1774 to 1776. He voted against the Declaration of Independence, since he believed it would inevitably escalate the Revolutionary War and that conflicted with his Quaker beliefs. He withdrew from the Congress soon afterwards.
