A document allowing Letcher, on motion made “<i>by the Hon: Reverdy Johnson, duly admitted and qualified, as an Attorney and Counsellor of the Supreme Court of the United States</i>...” Boldly completed and signed by the Clerk of the Supreme Court. Engraved eagle vignette at top center. Light general age toning; light scattered foxing; normal folds; o/w VG. <b>Reverdy Johnson</b> (1796-1876) was counsel for the defense in the Dred Scott case. He was credited with helping keep Maryland in the Union; served as US attorney general and ambassador to England.</span></p>
