Note: In 1924 Lavery and his wife Hazel made a return trip to Kerry,
staying with the extraordinary and colourful Lord Castlerosse at Kenmare
House. The paintings done in the garden are well known but the paintings
taking their inspiration direct from the Kerry countryside are now being
reassessed. These were mostly painted on a uniform size of canvas and
with the palette concentrating on the subtle dull greens and browns of
the landscape. The artist is intent on capturing the elusive and
shifting light patterns of the moody landscape; in this case the
afterglow of evening beginning to build up in a valley as a figure in a
donkey cart makes his homeward way. It is not clear what the title of
this picture should be. From the fragmentary artist¹s label, it seems
to have started out as ŒThe Kingdom of Kerry¹ but there is an extant
picture that carries this title. ŒBringing Home the Turf¹ was probably
attached to it when the picture went to America, perhaps an easier, more
stage Irish and presumably more commercial idea but the cart appears to
be empty and the concept is surely that of lonely independence, rather
than the coziness of a turf fire.
