(JOHN L. BURNS OF GETTYSBURG)
(1789 - 1872) Gettysburg shoemaker who, upon seeing Union soldiers marching past his home to battle, seized his old musket and joined the Iron Brigade. His bravery and resulting three wounds made him a national hero. Two partly-printed legal documents relating to cases brought against Gettysburg coach maker, Abner M. Townsly. The first D.S. is 1p. 4to, Gettysburg, May 9, 1857 concerns the theft of the chickens that were owned by John Wantz and charges Townsly with the crime. The second D.S. is 1p. oblong 8vo., Gettysburg, Nov. 30, 1862, subpoenaing John Burns and John Little as witnesses in a case between Townsly and the state of Pennsylvania. A seldom-seen pair of court documents, mentioning John L. Burns, from the now famous town. Archival tape repairs the seams of the 1857 document, slight toning, overall very good.
