(JOHN L. BURNS AS SHERIFF)
(1789 - 1872) Gettysburg shoemaker who, upon seeing Union soldiers marching past his home to battle, seized his old musket and joined the Iron Brigade. His bravery and resulting three wounds made him a national hero. A court document from the Adams County Court system, 1p. folio, Gettysburg, June 4, 1855 concerning the payment to Sheriff John Burns for serving a warrant to Henry Hubert. Hubert a resident of Gettysburg "…on the morning of Monday…did destroy, deface, and injure a tomb in the Catholic Grave yard situated in the Borough of Gettysburg…". Hubert possibly served in the 122nd Penn. Vol. during the war. Very good.
