JOHN JACOB ASTOR: (1763 - 1848) American fur trader and financier, Astor grew to become the dominant fur trader in America and built a fortune from investments in government loans and real estate. Rare A.L.S. "John Jacob Astor", with "Astor" penned twice more in text and envelope, 2pp. 4to. with integral holograph address sheet, Hellgate, Aug. 6, 1835 to his granddaughter, Emily Astor. In part: "...I was much pleased to receive your good and pretty little letter to see that you were all well and that you made so good use of your time of which you will receive the advantage hereafter...Irving came and is now with me. Poor Charles had a deal of trouble since you left here. He very imprudently left the school without leave and was unwilling to go back. His father came and made him go back. The consequence is that he loses his vacation. He is about to be prepared for college...he will go to New Haven [Yale University]...I hope John is making good use of his time, he ought to write to me. Give my love to all the family and to your dear mother in particular...". Very good condition. Astor would have been proud of his grandchildren: "Poor" Charles Astor Bristed graduated at Trinity College Cambridge, England, became an author, and wrote a book about the union of life which was widely acclaimed. John Jacob Astor III invested heavily into the first consolidated railroad system, the New York Central Railroad, and in Western Union. $1,500-2,000
