I issued a warrant & made Applications to the Treasurer for the Money to purchase the Materials necessary for the repairs of the barracks at Castle Island, but could obtain none, [...] of which will prevent me from Carrying into effect your resolve of April 26th requesting me to order the Recruits to the Castle, the Barracks in their present State being entirely unfit for their accommodation. Castle Island in South Boston harbor is the oldest continuously fortified site in British North America. In 1634 the Puritans built Fort William on the island. During the Revolutionary War, the fort was seized by the Americans who renamed it Fort Independence in 1799. All the forts—over the generations there were eight—were referred to as “the castle,” hence the island’s name. From the Hancock-Chase Collection, formerly housed at the National Museum of American History.
