JOHN HAMILTON
(d. 1746) Colonial Governor of New Jersey [1736-38, 1746], having earlier served as a member, and president on occasion, of the New Jersey Governor's Council under Colonial Governors Robert Hunter, William Burnet, John Montgomerie and William Crosby. Hamilton was known to have provided aid to the Canadian Expedition in the French and Indian Wars. Rare manuscript D.S. "John Hamilton" likely as a representative of the Colonial Governor's Council, 1p. small 4to., "Perth Amboy the thirtieth day of March - Anno Domini 1744", addressed "To the Surveyor General of the Lands of the Eastern Division of New Jersey". In part: "...You are hereby Required to Lay Out and Survey for Mr. Samuel Edsall or his Assigns in any Part Unappropriate in...Eastern Division of New Jersey (Except at Ramapack) Two hundred Acres of Land, he Rendering and Paying Six Pence Sterling Quit Rent p[er] Annum for the whole Two hundred Acres And for so Doing This shall be your Warrant...". Hamilton's red-wax seal is affixed at head of document. Age-toned, worn at fold, and affixed to a mat board many decades ago for preservation, and quite good.
