JOHN H. WINDER (1800-1865). Confederate brigadier general who commanded the notorious Andersonville prison, along with other prison facilities at Libby and Belle Isle. War-date AES on verso of partly printed CSA form headed “Department of Henrico,” 12mo, Richmond, Aug 13, 1862, granting Sergeant W. E. Claggett of Company A, 17th Virginia, a 60-day furlough against a medical disability. Rations and transportation home to be provided. Claggett had been wounded in the left shoulder ten weeks earlier at Seven Pines. Signed at bottom by W. S. Winder, assistant commandant at Andersonville and son of John Winder. On verso, furlough has been extended several times, the last, on Feb. 18, 1863, for 30 days. General Winder has indicated his approval for additional rations: “Rations commuted to the 15th March 1863 Jno Winder Br Gen.” The furlough is well worn; paper folds show some paper loss and tape repairs not affecting the General’s endorsement or signature. His son’s signature is very light but legible. Nice association.
