JOHN H. WINDER: (1800 - 1865) Confederate brigadier general and commander of the Confederate Libby Prison, Belle Isle and the notorious prison at Andersonville. He escaped the hangman, dying just before war's end. War-date A.E.S. in pencil on the verso of a letter from William N. McKenney, Senator from Norfolk City, "Senate Chamber VA Legislature", Mar. 24, 1862, requesting permission to visit Norfolk for sixty days. Winder endorses on verso, in full: "give the support subject to military authority at Norfolk Jno. H. Winder Brig". Very good. $200-300
