JOHN H. WINDER: (1800 - 1865) Confederate brigadier general and commander of the Confederate Libby Prison, Belle Isle and the notorious prison at Andersonville. He escaped the hangman, dying just before war's end. Especially rare, fine association war-date A.D.S. on verso of a partly-printed CSA form, 1p. 12mo., Richmond, Aug. 13, 1862 with the heading "HEAD-QUARTERS DEPARTMENT OF HENRICO", a furlough issued to Sgt. W. E. Clagett of Co. A, 17th Va. which was under Pickett at Gettysburg. The period of the furlough is for 60 days, issued against a certificate of disability, and is signed at bottom by W. S. WINDER, son of John Winder and Assistant Commandant at Andersonville. On verso, John Winder writes: "Rations commuted to the 15th March 1863 Jno. H. Winder Br. Gen." The pass is well-worn, with worn folds and a few tape repairs to verso, not affecting Winder's text or signature. The son's signature is very light but remains legible. Despite condition concerns, this is a fine and very rare association. $600-700
