He began his career as a coach painter, studied briefly under Abraham Cooper, and earned fame and prosperity for his portraits of champion racehorses. Herring exhibited at the Royal Academy, British Institution, and the Society of British Artists. This painting has a distinguished provenance, as it was acquired in the first half of the 20th century by a prominent West Texas businessman who owned a thoroughbred farm in Lexington, Kentucky.
