JOHN F. REYNOLDS
Signed by three Gettysburg heroes

(1820 - 1863) Union major general who fought at Mechanicsville and Gaines Mill, killed by a sharpshooter while leading his men on the first day at Gettysburg. Rare war-date A.E.S. penned on the verso of a "Report of Ordnance Stores" of Battery F, 1st Pa. Artillery, 1p. folio, [n.p.], Mar. 30, 1863. The report shows a good deal of equipment as being "Worn out" and "unserviceable", including bridles, whips, braces, blankets, bags, straps, etc. On the verso, Renolds writes: "Hd. Qrs. 1st Army Corps April 1, 1863 Appd & Respy fwd. John F. Reynolds Maj. Genl Vols. Comdg.". On the recto, there appears a signed endorsement by Col. CHARLES S. WAINWRIGHT indicating that he had personally inspected each item listed in the report. Charles S. Wainwright (1826-1907) served throughout the war as an artillery officer in the Army of the Potomac. He commanded the artillery brigade of the I Corps at Gettysburg and during the struggle for control of Cemetery Hill on July 2, 1863, Wainwright commanded all the guns on the eastern part of the hill. His batteries were instrumental in helping repulse the attack of the Louisiana Tigers, and they dueled with Confederate artillery the following day preceding Pickett's Charge. Yet another endorsement is signed by Lieut. CHARLES B. BROCKWAY who commanded Battery F of the 1st Pa. Arty. At Gettysburg, the battery was in the thick of the fighting. As a Confederate sought to take off with a caisson and the battery's guidon, Brockway seized the guidon - only to witness the staff being shattered as a bullet struct it. The document has been trimmed at left costing letters from words penned near the left margin, and an early repair was made to a fold split clear of Reynolds' endorsement, else very good.

Estimate: $1,500 - 1,750.
